A significant severe weather event is shaping up to affect central Mississippi this afternoon and overnight. A strong cold front will invade an unstable airmass and combine with intense winds in the upper atmosphere to create the development of severe weather.
As the cold front moves closer to the Mississippi River, it will slow down. Several rounds of heavy rain will form ahead of the front. Should this occur, widespread severe weather will be possible in the overnight hours.
Tornadoes, some which could be strong, damaging straight-line winds up to 80 mph, large hail and heavy rain will be possible. Areas along and east of the Natchez Trace Parkway could see 2-4 inches of rain. The weather will begin to deteriorate after 2pm and continue until 4am for areas east of I-55.
