To Speak or Not To Speak?

Hard to believe, but viewers are still talking about the hair cutting event we did on May 21. The older ladies at the gym comment about "how sweet" it was that my husband surprised me and cut my hair; some share their own story of getting their hair cut; and others want to know if I like my new short hair.

When I was at the gym yesterday, a woman came up to me and said "I am so glad you got your hair cut. You look much better with short hair." What was I supposed to say? I thanked her and made a comment about how much cooler my neck felt, then smiled and said "It will grow back. We are going to grow our hair again for cancer patients next year!" She winced and said "Oh really? Not again." Then walked away. I admit, my feelings were alittle hurt. After getting over the initial shock of the comment "I'm so glad you got your hair cut. You look much better with short hair," I thought to myself, "I hope you never need the hair we donated, lady."

Proverbs 18:2 says, "A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions." Everyone has an opinion and we are all certainly entitled to our own opinion. Just because we have an opinion doesn't necessarily mean we ought to share it. I believe wisdom knows when to speak and when to keep quiet. God gave us all a certain amount of common sense to use.

Before you "share it", ask yourself if it will bring glory to God. If it doesn't, don't "air it".

Wow, I love the last sentence of this blog.

Everywhere I've gone since my hair cut, someone has commented on it. And some of those people I don't even know! They say to me, "Your hair is so adorable cut like that. You have the face to have hair that short." I don't really know how to respond to that. It's as if they are saying, "If you had long hair, you would be ugly." Now, I know that my paranoia kicking in but still.

I think my mother made me feel the best though. She told me after I got it styled that Monday, "Y'know, I love your hair when it's short but your hair is so pretty when it's long." She knows I'll donate it again when we do Beautiful Links in 08 but I'm almost torn. I've had some say they love it short and some say they love it long. I feel like a yoyo in that sense.

In my heart, I know my hair will make a cancer survivor woman very happy when I donate my hair. I'm blessed to be able to grow my hair period. I'm the only one in my family that can grow hair as fast as I can. I'm blessed for that reason. My hair is my gift to those who need it more than I do. I can remember before I cut it wishing that I could just chop it all off and throw it away. But every time I thought that, I remembered why I was growing it in the first place. People have given me mixed messages about how my hair looks long or short. But even those that offend when they don't mean to (though most of them I know have to know that they do offend) deserve my hair if they need it.

And fyi, I loved your hair long. It was so pretty. In the same respect, I love your hair short. You have the facial structure to handle both lengths, long or short. So, nerts to those who don't like it long. I think it's adorable. And some people just don't know how to hold their tongue. You have to wonder if they mean to offend you. A lot of that has to do with how your parents raised you. I was raised to be humble and encouraging to everyone. Maybe that woman was raised to be stuck up and offensive to everyone. =)

Amen, well said, Barbie.

Pro 18:21 Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Barb, as you know, my mother is one of those survivors you speak of that has to wear a wig. I think it's a great thing you and your friends did and you look beautiful with long hair and short hair.
